STATEMENT OF THE STONE CIRCLE TRADITION OF WICCA (USA) ON SOCIAL JUSTICE

By Unanimous Vote of the Board of Trustees on This Day, 2 June 2020

WHEREAS

As Wiccans, we affirm our core belief in the equal and inherent worth of every human being.

We recognize that racism is a severe form of dehumanization, predicated on lies and defended by cruelty, violence, and exploitation.

We acknowledge that structural racism takes many formseconomic, political, social, and spiritualand that one of these manifestations of injustice is violent and often fatal assaults on members of the African American community by individuals, including by some sworn law enforcement officers, who have been emboldened to commit crimes with impunity.

We remember that in times of crisis, people of faith and conscience must not be silent, and that therefore because we believe in peace, social justice, human rights, the sacredness of diversity, and the dignity of every individual, we will not be silent in this hour.

We understand that as a majority-White religious group, our Tradition shares in the particular moral obligation of White individuals and communities to dismantle racist systems.

We join our prayers, our words, and our actions to the shared task of humanization, which requires us to confront cruelty and oppression in all their pernicious forms, including racist violence.

Our individual choices to intervene against racism, and for social justice, will not be and cannot be limited to this statement. However, because as a Wiccan community we have a duty to speak up in solidarity, we join our voice to that of other faith communities across the nation and the world in saying that racist violence against communities of color is immoral and intolerable.

We declare the truth that justice and healing are possible, but only if we work to manifest them in the world.

THEREFORE,

The Stone Circle Tradition of Wicca (USA) publicly reaffirms its spiritual commitment to anti-racist social change, and expresses its solidarity with people across the United States who are struggling to end racism and bring about a safer, more just, and more compassionate world.
